Authentic Native American Art
Cherokee Spiderweb

Long ago the world was dark and people were walking around bumping into each other, so somebody said, "What we need is some light." A fox overheard this and said that he knew a tribe on the other side of the world that had fire but they wouldn't share. The possum said that didn't bother him a bit, he'd just steal it and hide it in his pretty busy tail. So the possum set out on his mission and saw the fire burning in a hollow sycamore tree just as the fox had said. But when he hid it in his tail it burned all the fur off and that is why the possum has a bald tail. Grandmother Spider, a tiny water spider, was able to transport fire over water by making a thick walled pot to carry it in. She taught the Cherokee how to make pottery and told them stories. A Cherokee pottery artifact inpired this piece.
