Cherokee Hand-Painted Floor Cloths
Aunt Wilma's Antique China

Inspired by the lovely antique china cups given to Mary Beth by her Aunt Wilma, this floor cloth is particularly well suited for the kitchen or informal dining area. Mary Beth was first told of her Cherokee heritage by her aunt Wilma. Cherokee families who escaped the Trail of Tears in 1838 were forced to keep their Native American heritage secret. It was not until 1968 that it was legal to be a Cherokee in the South. A $1500 fine would be imposed on the family who typically had no money. Some families even buried the family Bible to conceal Cherokee names.
