Hundreds and even thousands of
years ago Americans adorned their homes with artful images. Inspired by these
images and a desire for them to grace the homes of Americans today, Mary Beth, known as "Woman Who Swims with Fire,"
hand paints Native American rugs, also known as floor cloths. She hand crafts authentic
Native American rugss in the tradition of the Cherokees
of the 1700’s who used floor cloths woven from hemp and painted in gay colors
to cover dirt floors. Mary Beth
uses 100% cotton canvas and paint that is much more environmentally friendly
to continue this historic craft.
When used as wall
hangings they will survive as heirlooms to pass on to future generations.
They were and are not only practical but valuable art. Floor
cloths survive today in museums from the 1800’s.
The culture of the Southeastern Indians was eroded with the invasion of DeSoto, losing forever much information about the great mound builing civilizations. Mary Beth celebrates the artifacts we have left from that time or earlier with these floor cloths.
