In the 1700's Adair, an early historian recorded that the Cherokee made floor cloths. Mary Beth, "Woman Who Swims with Fire," has carried this craft a step further and handcrafts wall hangings and placemats. Depicted on the left is a piece called "Grandmother Spider." It is based on an artifact of the Southeastern Native Americans from around 1000 AD.
Grandmother Spider brought fire to the Cherokee in the long ago past. She was also a storyteller. Along with this piece as with all of Mary Beth's work you will receive a parchment telling the story of "How Grandmother Spider Stole the Sun." There is also a depiction of the artifact which inspired this piece. Mary Beth's work is recognized by and approved of by the Smithsonian Institute Museum Gift Shops.
